Folk dance for well-being and community
What is Fod på Gulv?
Fod på Gulv (Danish for “Foot on the floor”) offers targeted folk dance sessions with live music and instruction as a tool to strengthen well-being and community among vulnerable young people and adults.
The project has shown measurable effects on both mental and physical well-being, as well as participants’ ability to engage in social communities, based on a 2.5 year study conducted by Aalborg University (AAU) following the projects first years.
Background and values
The project is based on the recognition that many people in Denmark struggle with poor well-being, and that cultural and movement-based activities can serve as preventive or complementary interventions.
It also refers to the World Health Organization (WHO), which supports the link between culture and health – as it can improve well-being and help prevent both mental and physical challenges.
Impact and documentation
Between 2022 and 2024, the project carried out a method development and research phase in collaboration with AAU. A total of 195 participants and 43 staff members from eight schools and institutions in Northern and Southern Denmark took part. Both qualitative and quantitative methods (questionnaires, interviews, activity sensors) were used to measure the effects.
Results show that participation in folk dance improves mental well-being and reduces feelings of loneliness.
Furthermore, the sense of community is strengthened – as one participant put it:
“You dance, you make mistakes, and then you laugh a little. You really feel that sense of togetherness – and we carry it with us afterwards.”
The research is of seldom scope and character in Denmark, with both qualitative and quantitative measurements, including questionnaires, interviews and body sensors. The study shows a significant difference between before and after measurement of mental well-being for the participants from start to finish of the six dance programs.
The video below offers a deep look into the project activities, the outcome for the participants, the work of the dance teams and the research of the project. Duration: 17 minutes with English sub-titles.
The next step
Fod på gulv is recently entering Phase 2 (2025–2028) of the project, meaning that it takes step onto the national stage. Now, dance, community, and joy will reach schools, institutions, and organizations across Denmark. More than 1,400 participants will get to experience how movement, music, and togetherness can spark new energy and strengthen both body and mind.
In this phase, three different programme types will be tested, each tailored to distinct target groups – from children and young people to adults and seniors. The goal is clear: at least 75 % of participants should experience improved well-being and a stronger sense of belonging.
At the same time, researchers will closely follow the project to measure its immediate impact, long-term effects, and social return on investment. This ensures that Fod på gulv creates meaningful, lasting change – not just a momentary spark.
To make the national rollout possible, instructors and musicians will receive further training, and strong partnerships will be built across the health, culture, and education sectors. The results will be shared through media, conferences, and international collaborations – inspiring even more people to put their feet on the floor.
